Technology

  • Students are large digital consumers who are always using applications on their phones and consuming video games, so it is important to instill students with knowledge that they could be the ones creating those apps one day.  Having an environment where students are able to learn how to navigate and use different tools and technological devices allows them to be creators and inventors as opposed to students who just consume digital devices.
  • STEAM/STEM education can introduce students to different technologies in different formats. It can foster an interest in coding or machinery. Having a wide variety of technology allows students to develop new interests or even further develop an interest they already have.

On "Technology Specialists:"

As more types of technology are being introduced into schools, such as multimedia production equipment, multimedia design and editing software, 3d printers and the like, it can be increasingly difficult for teacher-librarians to take on so much responsibility within their role.  Not only do they have to manage the physical library collection and available online resources, as well as teach classroom teachers and students how to navigate these resources, their role often also includes teaching students and other staff how to use all these new technologies as well.  This can be overwhelming for a teacher-librarian to take on alone.

Some schools or school boards may employ “technology specialists” or instructional technologists, who as the name suggests, have specialized knowledge and skills in these specific technological tools.  Although there have been cases where the presence of these specialists have had a negative impact on the teacher-librarian role, there are other cases where successful collaboration between the teacher-librarian, class-room teacher and technology specialist has created a seamless integration of technology into the learning process and maximized the learning experience for students (Johnston, 2013).

Strategies for effective collaboration to maximize student learning:

    • Defining roles, responsibilities, and expectations of the teacher-librarian and the technology specialist
    • Keeping the lines of communication open
    • Making time to meet face to discuss ideas and plans
    • Operating as a team and working together when making presentations on ideas and plans, and when delivering SLLC and technology-related professional development for other teachers in the school
    • Advocating for each other:  when approached by students, staff, or admin, include the other party in the discussion as well (Johnston, 2013).
